Call for Applications for the Master’s programme Modern East Asian Studies (MEAS) at Goethe University Frankfurt – Deadline for applications 15th August 2021

Goethe University Frankfurt invites applications for its international and interdisciplinary Master’s programme Modern East Asian Studies (MEAS). The MEAS Master’s is an English-taught degree primarily designed for students who hold a Bachelor’s degree in either East Asia related cultural sciences or the social sciences (e.g., economics, law, political sciences, sociology), history, or anthropology.

Students explore East Asia’s present and past from the combined perspectives of a variety of disciplines, while also sharpening their language skills in Chinese, Indonesian, Japanese, or Korean. In the first two semesters of the two-year programme, students attend beginners’ or advanced language courses in an East Asian language. Moreover, they participate in a core programme and elective courses to strengthen their profile in the social sciences. Finally, they learn to apply their methodological, theoretical knowledge and language skills to social, legal, and economic problems encountered in contemporary East Asia. In their third semester, students choosing the Research Track concentrate on empirical research preparing them for future PhD studies. Alternatively, students can also organize a stay abroad, either studying the language at a university in East Asia or doing an internship. Students enrolled in the MEAS programme profit from the vibrant research activities of the Interdisciplinary Centre for East Asian Studies (IZO) and related departments and faculties at Goethe University.
