“The Korean Peninsula in Times of Multiple Crises: Research and Teaching in the Social Sciences”
8th Annual Meeting of the Social Science Korean Studies Network in Europe (SoKEN)
Institute of East Asian Studies, University of Duisburg-Essen
May 23(Fri)-24(Sat), 2025
The Institute of East Asian Studies (IN-EAST) at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) invites social scientists whose research focuses on modern Korea to submit a proposal for the upcoming annual SoKEN conference. Senior and early career scholars and in particular advanced Ph.D. students are encouraged to apply.
In keeping with the theme, we are particularly interested in [1] proposals from scholars who analyze the causes, characteristics, and/or effects of the constitutional crisis in South Korea in politics, society, law, or political economy. We also invite [2] proposals on other topics within SoKEN’s scope of social science Korean studies. In addition, we are dedicating a special section of this meeting to sharing how we teach North and South Korean politics at European universities. Therefore, we encourage university faculty to submit [3] presentation proposals that include, but are not limited to, teaching approach/methods, content/syllabus, and challenges.
Once accepted, speakers must submit their presentation drafts no later than May 12, 2025. In addition, all participants are expected to be willing to chair a panel or discuss a paper. We are considering publishing the papers presented at the conference in a special issue/edited volume or a working paper collection, depending on the content and quality of the drafts and the willingness of the authors.
Accepted active participants will receive two nights accommodation and up to €150 for participants from Germany and up to €350 for participants from abroad for transportation. Expenses will be reimbursed on the basis of receipts to be submitted.
▪ Proposal submission deadline: March 15, 2025
▪ Notification of acceptance: March 31, 2025
▪ Draft submission deadline: May 12, 2025
Submissions (maximum 300-word abstract) as well as inquiries should be sent to ude.koreachair@gmail.com with the subject line: SoKEN-2025.
