INTRODUCTION

The Korean Studies Unit is currently funded by the Academy of Korean Studies as part of the Research Centre for Financial and Corporate Identity It belongs to the Faculty of Business and Law and focuses on Korea-related research and educational programmes.

This fully-funded PhD studentship is based in the Centre for Financial and Corporate Integrity (CFCI) which is one of two research centres within the Faculty of Business and Law. 

CFCI brings together researchers in finance, economics, corporate accountability and law to focus on both the internal and external drivers of financial and economic contemporary problems facing global businesses and to deliver research that can better interpret, challenge and have meaningful impact for policy makers.

CFCI aims to find solutions to both national and international problems that affect current and future global citizens by exploring a variety of transformative events facing global corporations and their impact on relevant stakeholders in terms of social, economic and environmental welfare and sustainability.

Our motto reads “Eradicate Economic Inequality and Corruption by Celebrating Corporate Integrity and Individual Accountability”.

THE PROJECT

The Korean Studies Unit at Coventry University is looking for 2 PhD candidates who will contribute to business-related Korean Studies.

Korean Studies in Europe have focused on political studies, history and literature. Coventry University plans to target niche areas of Korean Studies such as economic history, historical insights on economic development and material culture. Examples of possible research topics are as follows:

  • The impact of social/cultural change on occupations
  • The impact of rapid social/economic changes on Korean business culture
  • Koreans’ attitudes towards debts/ loans/ mortgages and interest rates and their social implications
  • Why Korean entrepreneurs choose the red ocean knowing that they will face fierce competition
  • History of Chaebol
  • Corporate fraud and financial crimes in Korea
  • Hierarchical organisational culture and its consequences

Other business-related topics are also welcome.

During the project, the successful candidate will undertake project work one day per week such as updating a project website, organising seminars and workshops and preparing for annual reports.
