Call for Applications – Assistant Professorship in the Economy and Business of Korea (tenure track) – University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany – deadline for applications – 9 January, 2026

The Faculty of Business Administration (Mercator School of Management, MSM) and the Institute of East Asian Studies (IN-EAST) at the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany, seek to make a joint appointment to an Assistant Professorship in the Economy and Business of Korea (salary grade W1 with tenure track to W2 in the German academic system). 

Applicants must have a doctorate in Economics or Business and demonstrate the ability to publish in renowned international journals. They should focus their research on the Korean economy and business and be fluent in Korean.

Ideally, the appointee

– has published in peer-reviewed journals

– has gained initial experience conducting third-party funded research projects 

– pursues a research agenda with the potential to attract additional third-party funding, and

– has proven or potential excellence in teaching and supervision of students.

The postholder should be able to contribute to transnational and interdisciplinary research projects and graduate programs.

MSM and IN-EAST offer an attractive, international research and teaching environment with a large network of international partners. IN-EAST combines regional research and teaching with the theories and methods of the economics and social sciences. 

The successful candidate will contribute to teaching in German and English within the Mercator School of Management and the Faculty of Social Sciences’ bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs. Supervision of theses in the field of Korean economy and business is required. Applicants are also asked to present their teaching concepts.

Within three years of their initial appointment, the appointee is expected to acquire a sound knowledge of German.
