University Instructor in Korean language – University of Helsinki – Deadline 12 May 2024

The University Instructor teaches Korean to students in the BA and MA programme in languages. The position includes teaching all aspects of language skills, especially oral skills, text comprehension and writing. The duties of the teacher include the teaching of Korean at the level of both BA and MA studies to diverse groups of students, spanning learners without previous exposure and learners for whom Korean is part of their linguistic and cultural heritage. In addition, the University Instructor is involved in other mutually agreed tasks (e.g. administrative tasks, planning and pedagogical development of teaching and curriculum/syllabus development). Research is not generally part of a University Instructor ‘s role.

The candidate for the position must have excellent oral and written Korean language skills and good English language skills. Cooperation skills and experience and willingness in creating teaching materials for different learner groups and participating in social outreach is desirable.

Requirements for the position and assessment of qualifications

According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee to a University Instructor position should hold an applicable Master’s degree and have relevant teaching experience. Pedagogical training and the ability to produce learning material and provide diverse teaching are given particular consideration.

When assessing the merits of the applicants, attention will be paid to university-level teaching experience in the field of Korean as a foreign language, appropriate publications, pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials suitable for higher education, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a teaching sample. In addition, experience in teaching in different learning environments and the use of educational technology as well as readiness to actively participate in the development of educational programmes is desired.

Pursuant to the Government Decree on Universities (770/2009), appointees to teaching and research positions at the University must be proficient in the language in which they provide instruction, i.e., Finnish or Swedish. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must also have good English skills. If the appointee does not speak Finnish, they must acquire proficiency in Finnish sufficient for the demands of the position within a reasonable period of time from the beginning of their employment. Further information about language skills and their demonstration can be found on our website.

What we offer

The salary for the position will be based on level five (5) of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The appointee’s gross annual salary is around €42.000–€46.800, depending on their qualifications and experience. There will be a six-month trial period for the position.
