About the Role
The Asia Institute welcomes applications from Korean Studies specialists with a proven record of successfully teaching Korean culture and language subjects.

Specifically, this role will undertake course development for, and teaching of, new Korean culture and society focussed elective subjects while contributing to the teaching of Level 1 introductory Korean language subjects.

The incumbent will join an established programme in Korean language, making a significant contribution to teaching at undergraduate, honours and postgraduate level, and contributing to research excellence within their discipline. They will adopt a student-centric approach in their teaching, ensuring an enriching and inclusive learning environment for all.

The research work of a Senior Lecturer will be acknowledged at a national level as being influential in expanding the knowledge of their discipline, whilst a Senior Lecturer will  provide leadership in research, including research training and supervision.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Subject coordination, including preparation and delivery of lectures/tutorials/seminars in Korean Studies, and supervision of sessional tutors
  • Delivery of tutorials/seminars in introductory Korean language subjects
  • Curriculum design, development and innovation, including initiation, development, and review of subject material at the undergraduate (including 4th-year/ Honours) level
  • Development of technology-based teaching, learning and assessment programs and resources
  • Administrative tasks associated with the subjects taught, including consultation with students, marking and assessment
  • Design and delivery of overseas subjects and other student mobility programs
  • Regularly apply for teaching and learning innovation grants (with emphasis on national competitive and peer reviewed)
  • Honours and postgraduate supervision, including RHDs
  • Active and collegial collaboration within the discipline of Korean Studies to support the growth of the program
  • High quality publications arising from scholarship and research in line with the Faculty of Arts minimum expectations
  • Applications for external competitive research funding
  • Participation in the research activities of the discipline and School
  • Active participation in international and national collaborative scholarly activities, including conferences and research projects
  • Active engagement in service, leadership and coordination roles in the discipline, School and Faculty demonstrating respectful, inclusive behaviours at all times and building trust amongst colleagues
  • Active participation in committees (discipline, School, Faculty, University)

Who We Are Looking For
We are seeking a committed and engaging educator with experience of teaching at tertiary level. You will also have the opportunity to conduct scholarly activity or academic research that informs and enhances your teaching. You will also possess well-established academic skills and strong academic performance.

You will also have:

  • A completed PhD in Korean Studies or adjacent discipline, preferably with a focus on Korean culture and/or society
  • A strong record in research with a developing publication profile in Korean Studies
  • Demonstrated expertise in Korean Studies, particularly the study of Korean culture and society
  • Demonstrate experience of teaching Korean language at the tertiary level
  • Demonstrated experience in coordinating and teaching non-language Korean Studies subjects
  • Expertise on Korean cultural production and the global dissemination of its products
  • Ability to attract research grants
  • Ability to supervise honours and postgraduate coursework degree theses
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the learning orientations of a diverse student cohort, combined with the ability to apply this knowledge and understanding to create a highly inclusive student learning environment

Additionally, at Level C:

  • A strong track record in research and publications in Korean Studies
  • Demonstrated course coordination, effective leadership and effective communication
  • Demonstrated capacity to attract research grants, especially for multidisciplinary and collaborative research
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching including the capacity to initiate and oversee course development
  • A record of supervising honours and postgraduate degree theses
